AI Crash + My New BE Trade
Thank you for sending in questions and feedback!
I read every single email I receive. I hope this Saturday email can clarify any questions you may have.
Let’s get to it.
First… A Note From Nashville
This week, Paradigm Press and a few hundred of our highest-tier subscribers descended on Nashville, Tennessee for our annual Paradigm Shift Summit.
We talked markets, politics, and shared a few dozen tickers we think will benefit from the current market environment.
I want to thank everyone who made the trip. Some of you traveled from across the country. Others came from halfway around the world.
I genuinely enjoyed meeting so many of you and getting the chance to talk markets face-to-face instead of through a computer screen.
Hopefully, I’ll see you right back here in Nashville next year.
And hopefully the market doesn’t crash while we’re on stage again.
Second… New Trade Alert – Bloom Energy (BE) Calls
I bought call options on Bloom Energy (BE) during the sharp selloff Thursday.
Five Bloom Energy December 18 $180 call contracts.
Friday’s rebound was good to me. I’m currently up around 20% as I type.
More importantly, I put the lessons that I preach into practice.
I constantly talk about zigging when others zag.
And it never feels comfortable hitting BUY when the market is in freefall.
Thursday was an opportunity to do exactly that.
Is an AI crash inevitable? And if so, what is the timeline? – Mark
Well, Mark, that’s the million-dollar question.
The answer is no. An AI crash isn’t inevitable, which means a timeline is anyone’s guess.
If you want my opinion, though, I don’t see a true dot-com-style crash happening anytime soon.
Yes, even after the volatility we saw this week.
I think there’s a good chance we look back on this pullback the same way we now look at the Japanese yen carry trade scare in July 2024 or the tariff selloff in April 2025 – a sharp burst of fear that ultimately created a buying opportunity.
Micron's P/E is 11.6 today and 12 month forward P/E is 5.09. What is wrong with this market and its investors and why wouldn't we be buying at this level? – Brent
Brent, the answer is simple: investors don’t believe Micron will earn what Wall Street currently expects. Or, at the very least, they don’t believe those earnings will last long enough to justify a higher valuation.
I disagree.
I think the AI infrastructure buildout lasts much longer than the market expects.
And eventually, Micron – and a host of other cheap AI stocks – will get re-rated higher.
What about Marvell Technology (MRVL)? In regard to the “blue wave” forcing data centers to become more efficient, won't Marvell's efficiency help too? – Rich
Hi, Rich. Thanks for the question. Absolutely, Marvell is a leader in a few areas that are crucial to efficient data centers.
The problem with Marvell is its acquisition of Lumentum (LITE).
Investors clearly don’t like the deal, and I’m not convinced Lumentum shareholders will ultimately approve it.
Until there’s more clarity, I’m staying away from Marvell.
Does the blue wave change your calculus on Fannie Mae (FNMA) – Beebs
Great question. I had several extensive conversations about this in Nashville.
There’s a strong argument that a “blue wave” could actually accelerate the Fannie and Freddie situation.
If Trump’s agenda gets bogged down by a divided government, his attention could shift toward priorities he can pursue without Congress.
Ending the conservatorships of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is one of them.
That could move Fannie and Freddie higher on the priority list.
I’m sticking with these stocks.
Could you address the data center issues of noise levels, light pollution and air pollution? – Neil
Sure thing, Neil.
Noise: Typically a faint humming sound that could irritate nearby residents. This is usually offset with distance, soundproofing, and better site design.
Light pollution: Because these buildings operate 24/7, they likely have lights from parking lots, security, and construction around the clock.
Air pollution: The servers themselves don't produce meaningful local air pollution. Diesel backup generators and, increasingly, onsite natural-gas generation could be a concern if behind-the-meter power sources are used more.
I was wondering if you could provide some insight on portable nuclear power plants? I invested in two, NANO Nuclear Energy (NNE) and NuScale (SMR) – Brian
Hi, Brian. These stocks rebounded sharply yesterday after competitor Oklo’s (OKLO) strong earnings report.
But zoom out a bit and these stocks have been terrible. SMR is down 84% over the last year and NNE is down 71%.
Here’s the story surrounding them: portable nuclear power sound great, especially during the AI buildout when connection to the power grid is scrutinized.
But these small modular nuclear reactor companies are nowhere near shipping a final product.
And the worry is that by the time they are, the AI buildout might be over…
If you want to take a flyer with money you can afford to lose, have at it. But know that these are highly speculative positions, and these companies likely won’t produce meaningful revenue for 2-3 years.
