ASTS’s “Elon Problem” + SpaceX and Fannie Mae

Thank you for sending in questions and feedback!

I read every single email I receive. I hope this Saturday email can clarify any questions you may have.

Let’s get to it.

I am a huge Elon Musk fan, and I have heard and read that Optimus is getting close to the point where Tesla will start ramping up production substantially in the near future. Which means they will need lots of materials and chips, etc. as that happens. Do you have any recommendations for companies poised to benefit from the upcoming Optimus ramp up in the near future? – John

Great question, John. The whispers I’m hearing about Optimus center around the number of actuators used.
Reportedly, 75–100 actuators could be used in each robot. Think of actuators as the robot’s muscles. They’re the small motors that allow Optimus to move its arms, legs, hands, and fingers.
If Tesla eventually builds millions of Optimus robots, it will need an enormous number of these components.
The challenge is that many of the potential suppliers are Chinese companies that aren’t easy for U.S. investors to buy.
Let me look more into this supply chain to find investable companies.

I appreciate your buy alert on EchoStar (ECHO). But you didn't mention the allocation, unlike the other positions in your Million Mission portfolio. – Alex

Hi, Alex. I bought 126 shares at $86/share.
You can see my portfolio towards the bottom of this email – and every other Saturday Q&A email as well.

Do you have any insight into the $100 billion facility Elon Musk is building in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana? Any picks and shovels stocks? Great column. I love it. – Josh

Hi, Josh. The announced Vermilion Parish site will be a spaceport designed to support thousands of SpaceX launches annually.
You could look at traditional picks-and-shovels companies like Nucor or Caterpillar. But I think the bigger investment opportunity is what happens because getting to space becomes dramatically cheaper and easier.
Companies like Redwire (RDW), Intuitive Machines (LUNR) and AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) come to mind.
If SpaceX really gets to thousands of Starship launches per year, it won’t just be good for SpaceX.
It would dramatically expand the entire space economy.

What if you guys are all wrong with AST SpaceMobile (ASTS)? Elon has before shown he can be a vindictive prick. What if he refuses to launch ASTS’s satellites? Or slow plays them, only sending up 4 or 5 when they expected 8/9+? – James

Very possible, James. This is why ASTS needs Blue Origin and Rocket Lab’s Neutron up and running ASAP.

Has AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) management had any comment on whether Elon will carry its satellites in his rockets, given they are competitors? – Arthur

No word yet, Arthur.
Although I do think this is a legitimate concern, Elon hasn’t historically been afraid to help competitors when it benefits the broader industry.
Remember, Tesla famously opened up many of its patents for other automakers to use.
And at the end of the day, SpaceX is in the business of launching satellites. If AST SpaceMobile is willing to pay for a launch, I don’t see Elon turning down the business simply because Starlink competes with ASTS.

Davis, Fannie Mae (FNMA) is down to $3.76. What happened? – Karl

Karl… great question. I’ll urge you to read my update yesterday after the stock spiked 20%.
But to answer your question, everything has happened except the one thing we were waiting for – Trump ending the conservatorship of Fannie and Freddie.
The wars in Ukraine and Iran demanded attention. Interest rates spiked. The midterms became a bigger focus. People thought AI was going to end humanity…
Ending the conservatorship simply fell down the priority list.
But that doesn’t mean it won’t happen eventually.
I knew from the beginning this wouldn’t be an overnight trade. The catalyst hasn’t happened yet, but my thesis hasn’t changed.
I’m sticking with Fannie.

Where Can I Read Previous Emails?
