CoreWeave: The $50 Billion Problem

What’s CoreWeave (CRWV)?

And how is this single stock tanking the rest of the market?

To understand why AI stocks are suddenly getting crushed, you need to understand what’s happening behind the scenes at this one company.

CoreWeave is a builder and operator of massive AI data centers.

It buys thousands of Nvidia GPUs, puts them inside data centers, and rents that computing power to companies that need it to build and run AI models.

Business has been booming.

CoreWeave has massive contracts with companies like Microsoft, OpenAI, Nvidia, and Meta.

But there's a catch.

Building AI infrastructure is incredibly expensive.

Before CoreWeave can collect years of revenue from these customers, it has to spend billions buying GPUs, securing power, and actually building data centers.

While companies like Amazon and Google can fund much of their spending with the enormous amounts of cash their existing businesses generate… CoreWeave can’t.

So it borrows.

A lot.

CoreWeave’s $50 Billion Problem

CoreWeave has accumulated roughly $50 billion in debt and other financing commitments as it races to build enough infrastructure to satisfy demand.

For a while, investors were comfortable with that.

AI demand was exploding. CoreWeave was signing huge contracts. Lenders were willing to provide money.

Then something changed.

The cost of lending CoreWeave money started soaring.

Some of the company's bonds are now trading at yields above 16%.

Think of the yield as the interest rate investors demand to lend CoreWeave money.

The higher it goes, the more worried lenders are about getting their money back.

And 16% is expensive money.

Now, it’s important to understand that CoreWeave isn’t suddenly paying 16% interest on all its existing debt.

The interest rates on most of that debt was set when the company borrowed the money – averaging around 9-10%.

The problem comes when CoreWeave needs to borrow more – like for the roughly $20 billion more it’s expected to borrow this year.

If lenders now demand something close to a 16% return to finance CoreWeave, future borrowing becomes dramatically more expensive.

Hypothetical annual interest on $20 billion:

  • 9% interest rate: $1.8 billion
  • 16% interest rate: $3.2 billion

That’s a substantial additional burden for a company already spending billions on interest payments.

Why This Is Spreading Across the Entire AI Trade

CoreWeave's problems aren't staying contained to CoreWeave.

Investors are now starting to ask: What happens if the entire AI buildout becomes too expensive to finance?

Hundreds of billions of dollars are flowing through an enormous supply chain.

Data-centers buy Nvidia GPUs → Those GPUs require memory from companies like Micron and SK Hynix → They need networking equipment from Broadcom and Marvell → The data centers also need servers, cooling systems, and enormous amounts of electricity.

The supply chain goes on and on.

But what happens when financing becomes so expensive that spending slows?

That same supply chain works in reverse:

Fewer data centers means fewer GPUs → Fewer GPUs means less demand for memory → which means less demand for networking equipment, servers, cooling systems, power equipment and everything else required to build AI infrastructure.

That's why we're seeing the selloff spread from CoreWeave to memory stocks, semiconductor companies, data-center stocks, and practically everything connected to the AI buildout.

So… Is the AI Buildout Over?

CoreWeave's financing problems are real.

If borrowing costs remain this high, the company may eventually have to slow its expansion, issue more stock, or find another way to raise money.

But I'm not ready to turn CoreWeave's debt problem into an AI demand problem.

Microsoft, Amazon, Google and Meta are still spending enormous amounts of money building AI infrastructure.

Demand for GPUs remains strong. Memory remains in short supply. Data-center construction continues. The earnings outlook for many of the companies supplying the AI buildout remains strong.

And consider the sheer scale of what's being built.

There are currently more than 2,000 planned data-center projects in the U.S., representing an estimated $2 trillion-plus in investment.

So while CoreWeave's $50 billion financing problem is getting all the attention today, it's just a fraction of the money pouring into AI infrastructure.

And even if CoreWeave ultimately needs a rescue, there are plenty of deep-pocketed companies that need exactly what it owns: AI data centers packed with Nvidia GPUs and access to scarce power.

So for now, I’m sticking with the AI trade.

This pullback looks a lot like the countless previous pullbacks we’ve seen since the AI buildout began.

Every one turned out to be temporary.

And every one turned out to be a buying opportunity.

I bet this one is no different.
