Democrats vs. Data Centers: Plot Twist
Let’s be contrarians today.
On Tuesday, Democrats swept the midterm elections and flipped both houses of Congress.
They also made major gains at the state level, including winning the governor’s race in Texas – the biggest data center market in America.
Investors immediately panicked over what a blue wave could mean for the AI data center boom.
And there’s good reason for it.
Democratic candidates have generally pushed for greater scrutiny of data centers, particularly around electricity prices, water consumption, pollution, and the massive amount of power these facilities require.
Data center stocks subsequently got hammered.
- Nvidia (NVDA) is down 13% since the election.
- AMD (AMD) is down 30%.
- Corning (GLW) is down roughly 19%.
- Bloom Energy (BE) is down roughly 25%.
These were some of the biggest beneficiaries of the AI infrastructure boom.
Nvidia and AMD supply the computing power. Corning connects it. Bloom helps provide the electricity to run it.
The market is treating greater Democratic control as bad news for all of them.
But what if Wall Street has this backwards?
What if tougher rules around data centers actually make the best AI infrastructure companies more valuable?
The Hidden Winners of Tuesday’s Elections
First, we need to get one thing straight.
America isn’t going to stop building data centers.
- There could certainly be delays.
- Permitting could become more difficult.
- Some projects may get redesigned or moved.
- And developers could face stricter rules around how much electricity and water they use.
But AI isn't going away.
Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and the rest of Big Tech still need enormous amounts of computing capacity to train and run increasingly powerful AI models.
So the more interesting question isn't whether data centers will be built.
It's how they'll be built.
If Democrats push tougher rules around electricity consumption, pollution and efficiency, data center developers will have an even bigger incentive to squeeze as much computing power as possible out of every megawatt of electricity.
Suddenly, efficiency becomes even more valuable.
And several stocks getting crushed right now are leaders in exactly that.
Nvidia and AMD – Efficiency Is Key
Start with the chips.
Nvidia and AMD aren't simply selling processors. They're in a race to deliver more computing power from every watt of electricity.
Nvidia says its Blackwell GPUs can be more than 50 times as energy efficient as traditional CPUs for large-language-model inference. Its newer systems can also produce dramatically more AI output from the same amount of power than previous generations.
AMD is chasing the same goal. The company says it improved rack-level AI energy efficiency roughly fourfold between 2024 and 2026 and is targeting another massive increase by 2030.
Think about what happens if electricity becomes an even tighter constraint.
A data center with 500 megawatts available can't simply ask for another 500 megawatts.
It has to get more computing power out of what it already has.
That makes the most efficient chips even more important.
Bloom Energy – The Behind-the-Meter Leader
Then there's the electricity itself.
One of the biggest political complaints about data centers is that they could overwhelm local power grids and push electricity costs onto everyone else.
Bloom is the solution hiding in plain sight.
Its fuel cells can generate electricity directly at the data center, behind the meter.
Instead of waiting years for a utility to build new transmission lines and power plants, a developer can install generation onsite in weeks and reduce its dependence on the grid.
Bloom's current Energy Server runs on natural gas and converts that fuel into electricity without combustion.
Its latest system lists electrical efficiency of roughly 53% to 65%, consumes no water during normal operation, and produces negligible SOx and extremely low NOx emissions.
These characteristics become increasingly valuable if regulators demand that data centers bring their own power, limit local pollution, or reduce water consumption.
In other words, the regulations investors are afraid of could actually increase demand for Bloom's technology.
Corning – Speed and Efficiency
Then we have Corning.
AI data centers need to move staggering amounts of information between GPUs.
Traditionally, short-distance connections have relied heavily on copper.
But copper becomes increasingly inefficient as AI clusters get larger and faster.
That's why data centers are moving toward optical connections.
Corning says its co-packaged optics technology pushes fiber much closer to the chips themselves, reducing power consumption while allowing significantly more bandwidth.
Its newest multicore fiber can also provide four times the optical pathway density with up to 75% fewer cables and connectors.
Once again, tougher efficiency standards don't hurt this technology.
Tougher efficiency standards make it more valuable.
Investors Have It All Wrong
There will almost certainly be more scrutiny of data centers after Tuesday's elections.
That's what voters asked for.
But the market seems to be treating every company connected to the data center boom as though greater regulation automatically means less business.
I think that's too simplistic.
If politicians demand that data centers use less electricity, consume less water, and operate more efficiently, developers will have to spend money solving these problems.
- Nvidia and AMD help data centers get more computing power from every watt.
- Bloom helps them generate efficient power onsite.
- Corning helps move enormous amounts of data using more efficient optical technology.
These companies aren't the problems regulators are trying to solve.
They’re the solution.
