Elon’s $30,000 Car That Pays YOU
It’s happening.
After years of promises, delays, and skepticism, Tesla is finally launching the Cybercab.
The company just hinted via X/Twitter that a Cybercab event is coming to Austin, TX in the next few weeks.
Employees have already begun testing the vehicle, first responders have been trained on how to handle it during emergencies, and Tesla is even giving away invitations to the launch event.
For what it's worth, I'm trying to get an invitation myself.
Unfortunately, my long history of criticizing Tesla's stock valuation probably isn't helping my chances…
Still, whether I'm there in person or watching from home, I think this could become one of the most important product launches of the decade.
Not because it's another autonomous vehicle.
Because it has the potential to create an entirely new asset class.
Cybercab – The Car That Pays YOU
You purchase the car once.
You go to work.
You go on vacation.
You sleep.
Meanwhile, your car spends the day driving passengers and depositing money into your bank account.
For more than a century, cars have been one of the worst financial purchases a person can make.
The moment you drive them off the lot, they begin losing value.
Insurance, maintenance, fuel, repairs, and depreciation make car ownership one of the biggest expenses for most households.
The Cybercab has the potential to flip that equation.
Similar to how Airbnb turned a spare bedroom into extra income.
Or how Uber turned anyone into a taxi driver.
Now Tesla wants your car to become an autonomous business.
So… How Much Could You Earn?
The key question is no longer: How much does the car cost?
The real question is: What could you earn?
Investor and researcher Cern Basher built a model exploring what those economics might look like.
The model assumes a Cybercab costs $30,000, charges around $1 per mile plus a small base fare, and that Tesla keeps about 35% of the ride revenue for operating the network.
It also includes realistic expenses like electricity, insurance, maintenance, and Tesla’s Full Self-Driving subscription.
Under those assumptions, a single Cybercab operating part of the day could drive 150 to 300+ miles daily, depending on how frequently it’s in service.
That translates into roughly $30,000 to $70,000 in annual ride revenue generated by the vehicle.
After covering operating costs, financing, and Tesla’s share of the revenue, the potential profits for an individual owner could still be significant.
At lower utilization levels, the vehicle could generate around $8,000 per year in after-tax profit.
At higher utilization levels, that number could climb toward $25,000 or more annually from a single vehicle.
And that estimate only includes ride revenue.
It does not include potential income from advertising, in-vehicle entertainment, delivery services, or other network features that could eventually be layered on top of the platform.
If those assumptions are even directionally correct, the Cybercab isn’t just transportation.
It’s a new asset class available to the masses.
But First… Let’s Tap The Brakes
As excited as I am about the Cybercab, investors should keep a few things in mind.
First, Tesla is still playing catch-up to Waymo in one important area: fully autonomous driving data.
According to Tesla, its robotaxis have logged roughly 380,000 driverless miles.
Waymo has surpassed 220 million.
Every mile exposes the AI to new situations, helping it become a safer and more capable driver.
Even Elon Musk recently acknowledged that Tesla still needs to collect Cybercab-specific driving data before deploying the vehicle at scale.
Second, we still don't know when ordinary consumers will actually be able to buy one.
Tesla has repeatedly said the Cybercab will be available for personal ownership, but it hasn't announced a timeline for customer sales.
Finally, regulation remains unknown.
The Cybercab has no steering wheel or pedals, meaning it can't be sold like a traditional car without the appropriate regulatory approvals.
How quickly those approvals arrive could have a major impact on the pace of adoption.
Coming Soon – The Moment of Truth
We'll learn a lot over the next few weeks.
Tesla is expected to officially launch the Cybercab in the next few weeks and, hopefully, answer some of the biggest outstanding questions.
- When will ordinary consumers be able to buy one?
- How quickly does Tesla expect production to ramp?
- What will regulators require before the Cybercab can be deployed at scale?
- And perhaps most importantly, what will the economics actually look like?
I'll be watching closely.
Because if Tesla can deliver on its vision, the Cybercab won't just be another electric vehicle.
It'll be the first mass-market car that actually pays you.
