Elon’s “Flying Car” Is REAL

I've got great news!

If you find yourself chasing down an alien who just stole a flying saucer, plans to escape Earth, and could potentially wipe out the entire human race in the process, I've got the car for you.

This exact problem comes up in Men in Black.

Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith are pursuing an alien when they hit traffic in the Queens–Midtown Tunnel.

Not ideal when humanity is on the line.

So Jones tells Smith to "push the little red button."

The car transforms, shoots up the tunnel wall, flips upside down and races across the ceiling above traffic.

Alien pursuit: back on.

Humanity: saved.

For nearly 30 years, that scene was pure Hollywood.

Then last night, Elon Musk unveiled the new Tesla Roadster.

The Little Red Button Is Real

I'm not exaggerating when I say the car revealed last night belongs in Men in Black.

During the demonstration, the Roadster drove up a curved wall until it was completely upside down – and it stayed there.

Then it reversed back down, accelerated up the ramp again, launched into the air, and used thrusters to rotate itself mid-flight and landed back on the pavement.

Next, the car drove toward a lineup of vehicles that included a Cybertruck, Cybercab, Model Y, Model 3, and Tesla Semi, and then using its thrusters to flip over them and land safely on the other side.

You truly need to see this to believe it.

Flying cars are officially here.

Tesla Engineering VP Lars Moravy said at the event that the Roadster uses a fan-powered suction system underneath the car that can generate up to 2 g's of downforce, allowing the car to drive completely upside down.

The thrusters that allow the car to lift vertically, he said, were borrowed from SpaceX.

The car has 10 such thrusters connected to an advanced ultra-high-pressure air tank that automatically recharges, allowing drivers to execute these maneuvers whenever they want.

Elon was then quick to ask the obvious question:

“How often do you really want to stick upside down in a car?”

“Probably not that often,” he answered.

“But it does have an actual benefit on the track.”

All that downforce means the Roadster can corner incredibly well because it's being sucked against the pavement.

“So it’s going to crush every track record that’s ever existed,” Musk said, before adding:

“This is not necessarily a safety-optimized car, but it takes the fun meter to 11 out of 10.”

The last event of the night was to test the starting speed of the car.

Could the car go from 0-60 mph in less than one second?

The answer is yes.

The car went from 0–60 mph in just 0.81 seconds. And Elon believes the production version will be even faster.

His only hesitation?

“Possibly detaching the retina of the human in the car” if they make it too fast.

Oh Elon…

So… When Can You Buy One?

Tesla says the new Roadster will begin production in 2028.

No word on cost yet. But you can reserve yours today with a small downpayment of $50,000.

And while we still don’t know exactly what the final production car will look like, last night answered a few big questions surrounding Tesla and the Roadster:

  • The Roadster is real – and it’s insane. It drives upside down, launches itself over other vehicles using SpaceX-inspired thrusters, and goes from 0–60 mph in 0.81 seconds. Musk has been teasing these capabilities for years. Now we’ve actually seen them demonstrated.
  • The Roadster isn’t going to move the needle for Tesla’s stock. This isn’t a Model 3 or Model Y designed to sell millions of cars. It’s a low-volume technological showcase designed to push the limits and show the world what Tesla – and SpaceX – are capable of building.
  • Tesla and SpaceX continue to move closer together. This may be the most interesting part for investors. SpaceX propulsion technology is now literally being built into a Tesla. The technological and financial ties between Musk’s companies continue to grow, which only strengthens my belief that Tesla and SpaceX will eventually become one company.

Here’s a link to the event so that you can watch for yourself.

I highly recommend it.

See for yourself how, nearly 30 years after Men in Black imagined a car that could drive up a wall, upside down, and over traffic…

Elon Musk built the real thing.
