NOT A FIGMA OF YOUR IMAGINATION
“I bought Rocket Lab stock because they’re my biggest customer.”
“They’re buying all the inventory I’ve got. I don’t even have time for anyone else.”
My friend wasn’t discounting cash flow or digging through earnings transcripts.
He was doing something better: paying attention.
This friend works for an industrial supply company.
After seeing firsthand how fast Rocket Lab was scaling, he bought the stock.
He’s now up more than 150%.
That’s what I love about investing.
Sometimes the best ideas come from the field, not the spreadsheet.
And this week, I found another such idea – this time much closer to home.
Introducing: Figma (FIG)
Figma IPO’d yesterday under the ticker FIG, opening at $85 after pricing at just $30.
It then soared above $100.
That’s a 3x gain right out of the gate, and a clear signal the market sees something special.
So do I.
Because I’ve heard more glowing feedback about Figma than almost any software product in recent memory.
And these weren’t vague compliments. These were enthusiastic endorsements.
One colleague told me:
“I’m obsessed with it. I use it every day.”
Another told me:
“It makes my life so easy.”
And another:
“I love Figma.”
It’s not every day you hear someone say they love a B2B SaaS company…
Yet I’ve heard that same tone from multiple sources over the past few months.
Figma started out as a tool to design websites and apps.
Think of it like a Google Docs for design where multiple people can work on the same project at the same time, from anywhere.
But it’s grown into much more than that.
Today, Figma helps entire teams (designers, developers, product managers, and marketers) work together to build software.
You can sketch out what a new app or website should look like, write notes, leave feedback, and even turn a simple idea into a working prototype you can click through.
They’ve even added AI tools that help turn plain English into rough drafts of software designs.
Figma has become the digital workspace where modern tech products get built – starting from just an idea.
It helps that the core product is excellent. But so is the business.
- Revenue grew 46% year over year in Q1 – Nvidia-like growth
- Net dollar retention is 132% – meaning customers don’t leave once they join
- Gross margins hover around 92% – higher than even the most elite software peers
No wonder its IPO was so hot.
More than half of the institutional investors who placed orders didn’t get shares.
The IPO was over 40x oversubscribed, according to Bloomberg.
That demand doesn’t just signal hype. It suggests Figma could be the first true breakout software IPO in years.
It already trades at a higher valuation than the $20 billion Adobe offered to acquire it back in 2022. (Regulators blocked the deal.)
And now it’s doing it solo, with more products, more revenue, and more momentum.
Of course, this isn’t a cheap stock.
At $100+ per share, there’s little room for error.
The market is already pricing in years of continued excellence. And software multiples can compress fast if growth slows.
That’s why I’m starting small.
I just opened a personal position in FIG.
It’s modest, but it’s a bet on quality, not just valuation.
And if the stock pulls back, I’ll look to add more.
Because the product is beloved. The business is humming. And the opportunity – to become the next great enterprise platform – is real.
Sometimes, the best edge in investing isn’t hidden in a footnote.
It’s right in front of you. You just have to pay attention.
