Stablecions Saved My Friend $120,000

Carlos sends money home to Mexico every month.

Coconut Inc. wires payments to India.

Both were getting crushed by fees, delays, and bad exchange rates – until they switched to stablecoins.

These are just two of the millions of quiet use cases that stablecoins have already solved – moving real dollars across borders in seconds, not days, for a fraction of the cost.

No middlemen. No SWIFT delays. No currency headaches.

And now, Washington is finally catching up.

This week, the Senate passed the GENIUS Act – a bipartisan bill that gives stablecoins official recognition and regulatory clarity in the U.S.

It’s a turning point that could accelerate adoption far beyond crypto-native circles and into the mainstream economy.

To understand just how big this is, let’s look at those two examples – and what they reveal about the future of money.

Use Case #1: Sending Money Home to Mexico

Carlos, a construction worker in Los Angeles, sends $300 a month to his family in Guadalajara.

Traditionally:

  • Services like MoneyGram charge 6–12%
  • Transfers take 1–3 days
  • Currency volatility eats away even more

Now, using USDC (a U.S. dollar–backed stablecoin) on Binance, here’s how it works:

  1. Carlos converts $300 → 300 USDC (1% fee = $3)
  1. Sends it via the Polygon blockchain – arrives in seconds, costs ~$0.50
  1. His family converts it to pesos and receives ~5,900 MXN, instead of 5,400–5,600 MXN with legacy services

That’s a savings of $10–$20 per transfer, or $120–$240/year – real money for millions of working families.

No banks. No paperwork. Just clean, fast transfers with near-zero friction.

Use Case #2: Paying Global Contractors

Coconut Inc., a U.S. software company, pays around $200,000/month to a development team in Bangalore, India.

Using SWIFT:

  • Transfers take 3–5 days
  • Bank wires and forex fees cost $5,000–$10,000 per transaction
  • That adds up to $60,000–$120,000 per year

Now, using USDC via Coinbase and the Solana blockchain:

  1. Convert $200,000 to 200,000 USDC (0.5% fee = $1,000)
  1. Send it instantly, for ~$0.20
  1. The Indian team converts to rupees and receives ~16.4 million INR — with only ~1% in total fees

Just like that, they cut costs by as much as $10,000/month, or $120,000/year, and eliminated all the traditional friction.

[Note: Use Case #2 isn’t theoretical. It’s based on a real example from a close friend of mine – the founder of Coconut – who was so fed up with SWIFT fees he considered launching his own stablecoin payments startup!]

Why Stablecoins Are Winning – and Why the GENIUS Act Matters

The world sends $2 trillion across borders annually.

Up until now, most of that ran on outdated rails – SWIFT, intermediaries, FX desks, wire rooms.

Stablecoins are changing that.

They offer:

  • Instant settlement
  • Low fees (1–2%)
  • No volatility (they’re backed 1:1 by dollars)

For people that say there are no use-cases for crypto… try again.

Stablecoins are already sending enormous amounts of money at scale.

And now, with Washington giving the green light, that number is only going up.

What used to be an underground tech experiment is quickly becoming the infrastructure for a new financial system – one that’s faster, cheaper, more accessible, and increasingly mainstream.

The pipes are in place. The use cases are proven.

And thanks to the GENIUS Act, the next wave of adoption is already underway.
