Here are my responses to this week’s batch:
What are your thoughts on our government owning a percentage of public companies? Is this a good thing or bad for our overall economy and the free market system? – Greg
Hi, Greg. There's a big difference between a socialist government taking control of a free enterprise and the U.S. government taking a minority stake in strategically important businesses.
Take the U.S. government's 10% stake in Intel, for example. The goal isn't to control Intel. The goal is to help rebuild America's semiconductor manufacturing capacity because it's become a national security issue.
Remember, Taiwan produces about 90% of the world's most advanced chips. And Taiwan sits about 100 miles from mainland China.
If China ever does invade Taiwan, and we still have no domestic chip manufacturing capacity, we’re likely talking about World War III.
From that perspective, a 10% investment in Intel seems a lot more reasonable.
I’d hesitate more if the U.S. government became a constant backstop, throwing endless money that distorts price discovery, or started taking larger, non-minority stakes.
For now, I recognize the importance of Intel – and the other strategic assets the U.S. government has taken stakes in.
I like and already own some of the stocks on your 20 year list. But what if you don't have 20 years? Do you have a list that would be in the 5-10 year period? – Tim
Great question, Tim. I'll link the article here for anyone who missed it.
Honestly, I'd be comfortable owning this same list for the next 10 years.
The difference is that some of these technologies will mature sooner than others.
For example, I think space, quantum computing, and air taxis are primarily 10+ year stories. They're still in the early innings.
On the other hand, autonomous trucking, drones, and Robinhood could see meaningful progress over the next 5 years.
If your time horizon is shorter than five years, I'd focus on many of the companies I talk about regularly here in The Million Mission – Nvidia (NVDA), Amazon (AMZN), Alphabet (GOOG), Micron (MU), Corning (GLW), and others.
I hope this helps.
Real quick about drones… What about one of their most critical components? Silver! – Chuck
Thanks for the question, Chuck. I think a balanced portfolio should have an allocation to both gold and silver – 5-10%.
But am I buying silver specifically because of the impending drone boom? No.
The incremental silver demand due to drones is minimal – especially compared to, say… the AI buildout that uses significantly more silver.
I’ve heard about the impact of quantum computing and its ability to easily break blockchain security. Do you have any concerns in that regard or do you think they will add another security layer to existing bitcoins? – Zach
Great question, Zach. Yes, this is a real issue that we’ll need to keep an eye on.
Bitcoin's security relies on encryption. And in theory, a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could eventually break that encryption.
We're nowhere near that point today, but it's something the industry is already thinking about.
The good news is that developers are working on quantum-resistant cryptography, and Bitcoin can be upgraded over time.
So I don't think quantum automatically means the end of Bitcoin. I think it means Bitcoin will eventually need a security upgrade.
It's definitely something I'll be watching over the next decade as both quantum computing and blockchain technology continue to evolve.
Should it be a concern that 2 directors of Aurora (AUR) over the last 3 months sold 100% of their holdings? About $21 million in value. – John
Hi, John. I generally put much more weight on insider buying than insider selling.
The reason is simple: there are dozens of reasons an insider might sell – diversification, taxes, buying a third house. There's really only one reason an insider buys shares on the open market: they think the stock is going higher.
It's also worth remembering that many executives and directors receive a large portion of their compensation in stock. As a result, insider transaction reports naturally skew heavily toward sales rather than purchases.
So while I'd certainly take note if multiple insiders were selling aggressively and the business fundamentals were deteriorating, I don't view insider sales alone as a reason to change my opinion on Aurora.
Is now a good time to buy SpaceX? – Maria
Great question, Maria. Plenty of investors are asking themselves the same thing.
Let me give you the short answer now and then I’ll explain my full rationale in my email this upcoming Monday.
If you want to buy a small position now – I can’t argue with that.
Personally, I’m waiting for the stock to fall further and then buy and hold for the long-term.
